Mousehole Christmas Lights

The World famous Christmas Lights in mousehole have been going for over 40 years. The people of Mousehole decorate their houses and the harbour with Christmas lights and decorations. This display is well worth a visit.

Tom Bawcock's Eve

Tom Bawcock's Eve is celebrated on the 23rd December. It pays tribute to Brave Tom Bawcock the fisherman who saved the village from starvation.
The story goes that when the seas where too stormy for the fishing boats to go to sea Tom sailed out in the stormy sea and caught enough fish to keep the villagers alive until the storms abated.
The catch was made into Stargazy Pie, where the fish are cooked heads and all, with the heads placed so that they look up (star wards).
The Stargazy pie is still available in mousehole, prepared in the Ship Inn.

Penlee lifeboat disaster

In 1981 the coaster Union Star developed an engine fault and got into difficulty and the local lifeboat was launched to help from Penlee station. Sadly, both the ship and the lifeboat were lost, together with all the crew and passengers from the coaster and the whole crew of the lifeboat.
On 19th December each year, the lights are switched off at 8:00 pm for an hour as an act of remembrance for the Penlee lifeboat disaster.
